The Cliffe
Located to the south of our village, The Cliffe (traditionally pronounced as ‘The Clive’) is a long low hill, the northern end of which is owned by the Parish Council.
It’s legacy dates back to the historic Borough of New Ruyton when it was owned by the Lord of the Manor and given over to the villagers as common land. In modern times the ownership of the land became unclear and the Parish Council succeeded in gaining title to it, paying a small sum in compensation to the Earl of Bradford who might have had some claim to the land.
The parish owned part of the Cliffe has been designated as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) to preserve it as an open space and prevent any future development. At the parish boundary the LNR joins with the ‘Nesscliffe Hills and The Cliffe Countryside Heritage Site’ owned and managed by Shropshire Council. The Parish Council has contracted with Shropshire Council to maintain our section of the Cliffe along with their own. A link to their web site below
Together these sites create an interesting network of footpaths and bridleways which at various highpoints offer great views over the surrounding countryside. The Parish Council is keen for the open space to be enjoyed by a broad cross-section of the community.
For walkers the land is classed as open access and there is a ‘Right to Roam’. Please use the link below to what freedoms and limitations this gives.
Dog walkers are welcome but please ensure you have control of your dog so that it does not pester other users or wildlife.
For horse riders and cyclists there are bridleways on the east and west sides of The Clive and one running down the middle on the crest of the hill. Please have control of your mount at all times and remember that under the new codes pedestrians have priority.
